4 Fun First Day of School Traditions

The first day of school can be a challenging day for some kids.  The apprehension of new classmates and teacher and possibly a new school can be a lot for a kid to deal with.  But there are also a lot of exciting things that come with “Back to School” time.  Soon the kids will have new friends to hang out with and new activities and sports to participate in.

These 4 Fun First Day of School Traditions will help you and your kids make some wonderful memories and help ease those first-day-of-school jitters.  Get the school year off to a great start!

1.  Celebrate School Year’s Eve.  We all celebrate New Year’s Eve, but how about celebrating School Year’s Eve?!  Turn the night before the first day of school into a party and give the kids a reason to celebrate.  Decorate the house, let the kids pick the menu and even allow them to invite a friend or two to celebrate with them.  You can serve ginger ale in champagne flutes and set up an ice cream sundae bar complete with sprinkles and whipped cream.

2. Giant After-School Snack.  Who couldn’t use a huge cookie or Rice Krispie treat at the end of a long day?!  Any kid is sure to love this idea.  Surviving the first day can be rough, they deserve a special treat. Make their favorite cookie dough and bake it on a pizza pan then write a special message in frosting on the giant cookie.  Or make a huge Rice Krispie treat by filling an 8×8 pan with the mixture and letting it cool, then cutting it into 4 equal squares.  You can add sprinkles or candies to make it colorful and fun.

3.  First Day of School Breakfast Party.  Decorate your kitchen with balloons and streamers.  Make a banner or poster celebrating your child and their first day of school.  Make their favorite breakfast and decorate their plate with whipped cream and chocolate chips.  Put on some lively dance music to get them moving.  What a great way to start the day!!

4.  Back to School Time Capsule.  Using a shoe box or a square gift box, make a back to school time capsule together at the end of the first day of school.  You’ll both love preserving those special memories!  Let your child decorate their box with scrapbook paper, stickers, ribbons or any other craft supplies they like.  Fill it with photos of the first day of school and special notes about what they like about their new classroom, their teacher and their new friends.  You can add special events that happen through-out the year as well.  Then you both can enjoy looking through it together on the last day of school.
